「One Year After COVID-19 Declared as Pandemic – Newly Enrolled Student Point of View」 Hello everyone. My Name is Adit, a first-year graduate student in Prosthodontics and Oral Rehabilitation Department which enrolled during COVID-19 pandemic starting from Autumn 2020. I would like to share my experience on enrolling my Doctoral study in Tokushima University during this pandemic. After going through this pandemic for over than one year, what do you think about it? What’s the difference in our daily life? I would like to share my experience as an International student that enrolled during this pandemic. I supposed to enrol my study in Tokushima University from April 2020. At that time, just a week before my departure to Japan, my VISA becomes invalid, therefore my flight was cancelled due to the Japan’s travel restriction measures on COVID-19 prevention, until undecided time. Every month, I must call Japan’s Consulate General Office in my country to make sure when it’s possible to go to Japan. Finally, the long wait is over. I got informed that I can start my study in October 2020. However, there are some additional documents and examination such as Real-Time PCR test. My arrival to Japan was at the end of October, and I had to follow 2 weeks quarantine measure in a hotel near Narita International Airport. Therefore, I came to Tokushima in the middle of November, which is later around more than 1 month than the scheduled enrolment period. Therefore, I could not attend some classes, but fortunately there was one on demand online class that I can take at that time. As a first-year Doctoral student, besides performing research, I also joined Intensive Japanese Course provided by Tokushima University to learn Japanese Language for my daily life. This course method was also affected by the pandemic. Instead of performing face-to-face class daily, there was only 2 times offline classes every week, and the rest was performed online. Regarding to language learning, the interactions in face-to-face conversation, hiragana/katakana/kanji writing evaluation is better compared to online. Moreover, there are also some cultural activities that usually provided in this class which being cancelled due to pandemic. In my opinion, although this pandemic has made undesirable experience in our life, sometimes it also leads to some positive behaviours too. For example, in a health perspective, a lot of people starts to be aware about the importance of hand hygiene, maintaining healthy state by performing exercise and nutrition selection to maintain immune system, and so on. In terms of working method, some places which previously doesn’t familiar with digital technologies, started to adapt with this condition in terms of online meeting, classes, and other systems. Currently, many countries had been started the vaccination on COVID-19, including Japan. I hope this pandemic will be over soon so that we can do some activities as we supposed to do back then. My name is Fadyl, one of the foreign students who study at Tokushima University. I am from Indonesia and just came to Japan in April 2018. I want to share regarding the academic activities as the graduate student in Oral Sciences of Tokushima University. The major which I have been deeply learning is Prosthodontics Department. These have two departments of prosthodontics which one is ichi-hotetsu, means first prosthodontics with the field in prosthodontics and oral rehabilitation, and the other is ni-hotetsu, means second prosthodontics scoped in stomatognathic function and oral reconstruction. Additionally, the differences between both departments are ichi-hotetsu focused on the removable denture and ni-hotetsu read up fixed denture. The next question, what is prosthodontics department located me? I was placed in ichi-hotetsu, first prosthodontics. At the first semester, I commenced for learning basic research such as cell culture, western blot, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), flow cytometry, etc. Furthermore, I tried examination of histology and immunochemistry tissue after taking out DC cells from bone marrow of mice, in vivo study. My topic research field on immunology and metal allergy, thus I have to proficiency and scrutiny in the basic research. The others activity, campus is facilitated by lecture in class and e-learning, which are so interesting and updated. Furthermore, I took the Japanese language class, even if not obligatory, yet I think is really useful for my daily life to understand and communicate well in the Japanese language. Every month, we have a schedule to journal club and continue to discuss our progress report of the research with our supervisor, and also conduct to evaluate meeting about our research with Professor, based on the research topic. Every week, we hold the meeting for all of the members in our department that presenter takes a turn among of us. On the other hand, graduate students have the duty in the hospital to treat patients. But, for the foreign student, we don’t have the dentist license in here, so we just obligate become the assistant. The frequency to work in the hospital depends on the department, but in here at least twice a week. Moreover, sometimes the graduate school of oral sciences invites abroad speaker or guest speaker, who has a specialty in the particular research, therefore we can follow the class to get more insight about the novelty knowledge. In this time, I just emphasize about the internal research activities as graduate student in Tokushima university, someday I will continue my story concerning outside activities in the academic. Thank you.
